Where to Start- Need food?
Visits to obtain food at the Community Food Center are by appointment only. Call us to arrange for an appointment for your first-time visit to the Center (506-383-4281). When you arrive at your scheduled appointment, you will be greeted by one of our friendly volunteers who will help you. We recognize that every individual or family has unique circumstances, and we will do our very best to ensure that you receive the type of service that will be most beneficial in each situation.
Our staff will speak with you about your situation and need for food whether for an emergency or temporary timeline, or for a long-term basis. You may be asked to provide information such as your Medicare card, and address as well as information regarding others living in your household. You may also be asked to provide financial information to help us better access your situation. Working together we will then decide together when you qualify to obtain food, how often, and for how long. At that time, you will also be asked about non-food related needs and how we can help you overcome your difficult situation. We want to support you in any way that we can!
Once you are registered you will be able to go straight into the centre on your scheduled visits and see intake workers for access to your order and be provided with your next appointment/review date. When you return on that date, you will meet with a member of staff to evaluate your situation and adjust things as needed. It is important to note that all review dates are established based upon the individual needs of the client.
Here is what you need to bring your first time:
- The medicare cards of all individuals living in your household
- Identification to verify your current address
- Proof of monthly income (pay slip, bank statement, cheque stub, etc)
- Proof of regular monthly expenses (rent, utilities, phone, vehicle expense, etc)
Food – What will I get?
The food boxes are prepared in advance and consist of the basic food items. They are adjusted based upon the number of individuals in your household and/or family size. If you have any allergies or diet requirements you must inform the staff before your visit so that your food box can be modified to accommodate special needs.
You will then have access to available choices of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as bread and sweets.
Depending on family size you will receive colored tags (chips). Each tag will give you access to items in our food/specialty items stations. Examples of items that will be available include: personal hygiene, cleaning, baking, prepared or ethnic meals, baby products, etc. These items will change based upon availability and will be listed on the notice boards at each food/speciality items station.
We will have available fresh food boxes for purchase to qualified participants. Please see a member of our staff or call us for more information.
The Food Centre will have applications on hand and will be a drop off point to pick up your fresh food box!
